  3. Boiling water cannot remove some bacterial spores and chemicals, leaving consumers vulnerable to impurities in their drinking water
  4. iSpring’s systems provide guaranteed, clean drinking water

The Truth About Purifying Water Through Boiling

If your goal is to enjoy safe, healthy drinking water, boiling your water may not be as good as you think. Why? Despite what many presume, boiling water does not sterilize it. Instead, it pasteurizes it, killing or inactivating disease-causing germs such as protozoa, viruses, and bacteria but leaving behind harmful contaminants such as chlorine, lead and other heavy metals, microplastics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fertilizers, and industrial chemicals that may be present. For this reason, boiling water is not the one-stop-shop solution many believe it to be for enjoying pure drinking water.

There are, of course, times when boiling water is appropriate. After an emergency situation, tap water may be unavailable or the water quality may have been compromised. In these cases, boiled water is a good choice if access to bottled water is unavailable.

It is always important to keep in mind that boiling water does not guarantee safety from all harmful contaminants as some bacterial spores, not typically associated with waterborne disease, are capable of surviving boiling conditions.

Because boiling water may not remove all chemicals, a boil-water response is also inappropriate when chemical contamination is present. This may increase exposure to chemicals such as nitrates and solvents by concentration in the boiled water or by volatilization into the breathing zone. It is also not effective to boil water if water has been contaminated with raw sewage or high turbidity.
